Tourist from Essex who drowned at Perran Sands
10th September, 1960
John was drowned at Perran Sands, age 26, and a contemporary short report from the Birmingham Daily Post describes how 'two brothers raced for a mile and a half up the beach to get help, though they were too late'.
The report gives John's home as being in Woodford Bridge, Essex, so perhaps he was in Cornwall on holiday at the time of the accident. Less than a week later, another Mr Shillito working as a guard on a freight train near Stratford-upon-Avon, is mentioned as having a lucky escape when he jumped from a guard van just before another train coming up behind ran in to it. The guard is reported to have been living at Woodford Bridge, in a location very near to that of Johh Shillito, so perhaps this was his elder brother, David, two years John's senior.
